Baseball Opens “Spring Break” With Win at Mt. SAC

Walnut, CA - The Citrus College Baseball team opened up their 2017 "Spring Break", their annual week off from Western State Conference action, with a win at Mt. San Antonio College on Tuesday evening. The Owls used a big sixth inning, and then held off the Mounties down the stretch for the 6-4 win.

Sophomore Kyosuke Ushimaru opened the scoring for both sides in the top of the second with an RBI triple that brought in freshman Jesse Villalobos. The Mounties would answer right away though and take their first and only lead of the game with a pair of unearned runs that put Citrus in a 2-1 hole.

The Owls bided their time until the aforementioned sixth inning rolled around. Freshman Benjamin Aguilera started the inning off with an RBI single that plated freshman Donovyn Curiel. Freshman Andre Flores would follow that up with an RBI single of his own that brought in sophomore Marcos Campos, while a bases clearing 2-RBI triple by Villalobos made it 5-2. The Owls weren't done yet though as Villalobos scored on a balk a few pitches later giving Citrus a four-run lead.

Citrus would end up needing nearly all of it as the Mounties tried to mount an eighth inning rally. Mt. SAC scored twice in that frame, but Citrus held tight as sophomore Aaron Bernal got a win to improve to 8-1 on the year and freshman Peter Eitapence nabbed his first save of the season.

With the win, Citrus improves to 17-3-2 overall. The Owls will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when they travel to take on Pasadena City College for a 2:30 PM first pitch.
