Owls Upset By Valley

Glendora, CA -- Coming off a big win over previous State ranked #4 Antelope Valley College, the Citrus College Men's Basketball team came out sluggish on Wednesday night in their contest with Los Angeles Valley College. It bit them in the behind late in the game, as the Owls were upset by Los Angeles Valley College who picked up their second win of the year 70-67.

The first few minutes of the contest weren't so unkind to the Owls as Citrus scored the first six points of the game. Citrus even led as much as three and a half minutes into the game, but a 14-1 spurt by the Monarchs quickly put the Owls behind. Citrus really didn't know what had hit them early on as LA Valley led by as much as 13 with just over six minutes to go in the first half. Citrus tried to rally, but still went into the break down nine.

In the second half, Citrus came looked like they had finally found their footing, scoring 10 of the first 12 points of the half and briefly taking the lead 34-33 after a trey by freshman John Roach with 17:36 to go. The two teams would trade the lead back and forth over the next few minutes with the Owls wrangling back the lead 45-44 after another three ball by Roach with 12:17 to go. That would be the last time Citrus would see the lead.

Valley did it's best to distance itself from the Owls from there on out. They took a nine point lead with 7:46 to go, and had an answer for every Citrus charge. The Owls would get their deficit down to three twice in the final 30 seconds of the game and had multiple chances to tie it up, but it was all too little too late as Citrus ultimately fell by three.

In the loss, Citrus was led by freshman Chris Reyes who had a game high 16 points and game high 11 rebounds to go with a game high four blocks. With the loss, Citrus drops to 10-6 overall and 3-2 in WSC South play, moving them out of the driver seat in the WSC South race at nearly the halfway point. Things won't get any easier for the Owls as they travel to a quickly improving West Los Angeles College squad on Saturday at 5:00 PM.
