Owls Draw Even With AVC in Conference Opener

Glendora, CA - The Citrus College Men's Soccer team opened up their inaugural Western State Conference South Division schedule on Tuesday afternoon by drawing even with visiting Antelope Valley College. The Owls and Marauders played a close and entertaining match throughout, but when the whistled blew three times it was Citrus 1, Antelope Valley 1.

The match was back and forth throughout with the Marauders taking 11 total shots and the Owls 10. Citrus would earn seven corner kicks to Antelope Valley's three, and each would take an equal number of shots on goal. The first shot to make it past the keeper would come off the foot of freshman Ramon Gutierrez Jr. Gutierrez Jr., would take a pass from freshman Brian Ellis in the 11th minute of the match and send the ball towards the goal where it bounced off an unwitting AVC defender and beyond the outstretched grasp of the Marauder keeper.

The Owls would cling to that early 1-0 lead until just a mere two minutes into the second half. Earning a free kick, nearly right away, the Marauders sent a picture perfect ball into the box, where it the found the head of one of the leading goal scorers in the State and just past freshman Gabriel Perez-Negron. Despite the one goal, Perez-Negron was strong in goal for the Owls, stopping the other five shots that came his way, and cleaning up a number of crosses and close calls to keep it a 1-1 tie.

With the tie, Citrus moves to 5-3-2 on the year and 0-0-1 in WSC South play. The Owls will be back at home on Friday when they host Bakersfield College, who like Antelope Valley College is in it's first season of competition, at 3:00 PM.
