Citrus Men's Water Polo defended its home pool Wednesday when it hosted conference rival Santa Monica at the Citrus Aquatics Center. The Owls outlasted the Corsairs in a tightly contested battle, 14-13.
The Citrus guys got off to a strong start on offense, netting 3 goals in the first 4 minutes and maintaining the lead until late in the 3rd quarter when Santa Monica surged, catching up to Citrus and then establishing a lead that would last into the 4th quarter. But the Owls retaliated in turn with key goals, one of them by Anthony Alacorn that tied it 10-10. Citrus continued to add to the scoreboard, and held off the Corsairs despite a couple of late scares that almost changed the outcome. Santa Monica netted 2 goals in the last minute after the ejection of Elijah Graves, forcing Citrus into a timeout. The Owls would come out fighting on defense though, and Keith Green scored a clutch transition goal with 32 seconds left. Santa Monica made it close with a goal at the 10 second mark, but the Owls would eventually prevail, topping the Corsairs 14-13.
Citrus moves to 1-1 in conference play, and 8-6 overall. The Owls jump back in the pool next Wednesday when they travel to Ventura for a conference matchup.
