Women’s Basketball: Owls Close out Cypress Tournament in Consolation Final

Cypress, CA - The Citrus College Women's Basketball team continued their 2019-2020 season this past weekend at Cypress College where they participated in the 36th Annual Lady Charger Classic. The Owls opened up the weekend with a close loss to State #19 East Los Angeles College, before rallying with a victory over Compton College. They closed out the weekend with a tough setback against NJCAA Division I member Arizona Western College.

vs East Los Angeles 

After falling behind by nine after the first quarter, the Owls outscored the Huskies by one in the second and seven in the third to pull within a single point prior to the final frame. East Los Angeles opened up the fourth with a mini 6-0 run, and the Owls were never able to get close than four as they fell 57-61.

Sophomore Malia Rocha continued her recent hot scoring streak. After scoring a career high 30 points against Rio Hondo College two weeks prior, Rocha poured in 25 hitting five treys. Freshman Dy'Mond Mitchell added 18 points and 14 boards, while freshman Julie Garcia Man also had 14 rebounds, including eight off the offensive glass.

vs Compton

In what ended up a defensive struggle, the Owls were able to outlast the Tartars after holding Compton to 16.3% shooting from the floor. For Citrus, they shot 41.2% from the field but were out rebounded by 24. Citrus would actually trail by a point early in the fourth, but the Owls scored nine of the final 11 points of the contest to prevail 38-32. 

Mitchell paced all scorers with a game high 16 points, reeling in a team high 12 rebounds. Rocha added eight points, while sophomore Jailene Rosas had seven.

vs Arizona Western

Citrus got off to a slow start against the scholarship school, and struggled to find their offensive rhythm until really the second half. The early deficit proved to much for the Owls to overcome in the 85-42 loss. Mitchell was once again a bright spot for Citrus, scoring a team high 13 points to go along with four rebounds, an assists, and a steal. Rocha added 12 points, seven boards, and four assists, while Garcia Man rounded out the highlights with eight points and a game high 16 rebounds. For her efforts, Mitchell was named to the All-Tournament team.

The Owls will be back in action, in a week and a half, when they participate in the 2019 Grossmont College Holiday Classic. Citrus will have a tough draw as they open up with State #9 LA Trade Tech on Tuesday December 17th, before taking on Cypress College on Wednesday, and their week's host Grossmont College on Thursday.
