After cooling off from a hot performance on Friday, Citrus College found its spark again and grabbed a 72-52 victory over Rio Hondo College to win third at the Mt. San Antonio College Tip-Off Classic.
The Owls improve to 2-1 on the year, while the Roadrunners drop to 1-2.
Katherine Goostrey was named to the All-Tournament Team after posting 23 points against the Roadrunners to average 22.0 points per game over the weekend. Giselle Garcia-Nunez followed with another double-double: 19 points, 17 rebounds. Tiffany Hall also finished in double figures at 10 points.
As a team, the Owls shot 45.5-percent from the floor (25-55) and won the glass 45-to-33.
Goostrey got Citrus on the board first, draining a shot from the perimeter off a Reanne Reola assist.
Rio Hondo kept things close in the first half, only allowing the Owls a four-point cushion at halftime, 35-31, but that all changed when Citrus took the court in the third. The Owls outscored the Roadrunners 24-3 to up their lead to 59-34, shooting 55.6-percent (10-for-18) from the floor and not allowing Rio Hondo to make any field goals (0-for-13) in the 10-minute period.
It all but sealed the 72-52 victory, despite the Roadrunners out-scoring the Owls 18-to-13 in the fourth.
Citrus looks to build off its first weekend of action as it hosts Irvine Valley on Friday at 5:00 p.m. in the Owls' Nest.
