Women's Soccer: Huge Win Over Santa Monica Lands Owls 1st in WSC South

Citrus Women's Soccer hosted Santa Monica College for a Western State Conference South match on Friday. The Owls beat the Corsairs 3-1, capturing the #1 spot in the feisty conference and sending the visitors down to the #2 spot.

The game was a defensive battle for the entire first half of play. Both teams played each other tough, sizing each other up for the full 45 minute period. The halftime score would be deadlocked at 0-0.

But Citrus had a spark out of the halftime break that is unmatched in 2019. The Owls came out with a pep in their step and a chip on their shoulder, determined to score and take the lead in conference. In the 54th minute, midfielder Isabela DeLeon broke the tie, putting a shot in the back of the net for her 3rd season goal, putting the Owls up 1-0. About 20 minutes later, the Owls struck again, this time on a goal by Berenice Mancinas in the 74th minute that extended the Owl lead to 2-0.

Santa Monica snapped out of its shell shock, surging on Citrus and putting pressure on the defense. The pressure would pay off when Ceirra Little scored for the Corsairs at 81:19. That put the score at 2-1, a bit too close for comfort for the home team. Citrus promptly responded to the Santa Monica goal when Mancinas scored her 2nd goal of the day, this time on a beautiful through ball from Amethyst Trang. The Owls managed the clock well for the remainder of the 2nd half, and held on for the win 3-1.

The win improves the Owls to 7-4 overall, and a perfect 4-0 mark in conference play. Citrus continues their red hot season on Tuesday in Glendale for a 7:00 PM game under the lights.
