Ventura, CA -- The Citrus College Women's Swim team opened up the first day of the Western State Conference Championships with a strong start. Citrus accumulated 69 points during the first day's action, double what they did in 2014.

Citrus opened things up in the evening finals session with a fifth place finish in the 200 Free Relay. Freshmen Abbey Sorensen, Elaine Hodge, and Miranda Furuto along with sophomore Lauren Quintero, combined to post a time of 1:46.81, finishing just three-tenths of a second out of a fourth place finish.

After that Hodge and fellow frosh Alexandria Romero turned their attention to the 500 Free, where they both picked up valuable points. Hodge finished 10th overall with a time of 5:36.41, while Romero was 14th with a time of 5:53.30, a nearly nine second improvement from her prelim swim.

In the 200 IM, it was freshman Katelyn Rivas and sophomore Kimberly Torres' turn. Rivas finished in 12th with a time of 2:34.20, while Torres was 13th with a time of 2:35.15. In the 50 Free, Furuto turned in the Owls' best performance of the day, finishing in second place with a time of 25.60.

The Owls closed out the day in the 400 Medley Relay, and caught a tough break after being disqualified with a time that could have earned them up to 26 more points.

Citrus will be back in action on Friday morning and evening with the prelims coming in the morning session and the finals taking place in the evening at the Ventura College Aquatics Center. Day two will feature the 400 IM, the 100 Fly, the 200 Free, the 100 Breast, and the 100 Back, along with the 200 Medley and 800 Free Relays.
