Owls Close Out Tournament With Two More Wins

Glendora, CA – The Citrus College Women's Water Polo team closed out their 2016 home hosted tournament with two more wins on Saturday. The Owls opened up the day with a 4-3 defensive slugfest win against San Diego Mesa College, and wrapped the weekend up in the very last game of the day, defeating Pasadena City College 13-2.

San Diego Mesa would open the early game with a score on their first possession. Citrus answered with 5:26 to go when freshman Chloe Barrocas took a pass from freshman Lindsay Powell and put it in the back of the net. Mesa would regain the lead at the 2:52 mark, but freshman Johanna Chazaro Cortes tied the game back up with 41 seconds to go on an assist by sophomore Gabriella Galbraith.

In the second quarter, neither team found the back of the net, and the third quarter came and went with just one goal, an unassisted goal by freshman Hunter Olivier with 2:24 remaining in the period. With the game teetering, Olivier finally gave Citrus a tad bit of breathing room when she scored off a pass from Barrocas with 1:18 left in the game. The Olympians would score with 47 seconds to go to make it a one goal game, but the Owls were able to hold off Mesa until the final horn sounded. Goalie Delaney Moller had a strong showing in the cage with nine stops.

In the second game, Citrus regained some offensive confidence, but it was a slow build. The Owls outscored Pasadena City College 3-1 in the first quarter on the strength of two goals from Olivier, and then extended their lead with a 4-0 second quarter to take a commanding 7-1 lead into the break. In the third quarter, Citrus continued to build their lead with a 4-1 period, before closing out the game with two more goals in the fourth, while holding the Lancers scoreless over the final 8:18 in the game.

In the win, Olivier scored four times, handed out three assists, and recorded four steals. Powell scored four more goals, and had a pair of assists and steals. Moller recorded seven saves and three steals.

With the two wins, Citrus runs it's record to 15-8 on the year. The Owls will be back in action later this week when they host Santa Monica College on Wednesday at 3:30 PM.
