Women’s Water Polo Break Even in Tournament Play

The Women's Water Polo team spent the past weekend at the 2017 TruWest Battle at the Beach facing off against a handful of compelling teams that included the Fullerton College Hornets, Long Beach City College Vikings, the Golden West College Rustlers, and the Santa Barbara City College Vaqueros. Santa Barbara is currently leading the Western State Conference with the Owls trailing right behind in second place. With the tournament play, Citrus pushed their overall season record to 14-8. Finishing the tournament 2-2 in their four games, the Owls defeated the Hornets 15-12 and the Vikings 11-10 while losing 8-7 in a tight game to the Rustlers and 12-9 to the Vaqueros.

In their win against the Hornets, the Owls were led offensively by Hunter Olivier who tallied 6 goals for Citrus. Behind Olivier was Jessica Carmody who also had great offensive input with 4 goals. The Owls offense carried the team to a win and proved to have several playmakers who could come in and make an impact.

In their loss versus the Vaqueros, the Owls proved to be a worthy matchup against one of the best Women's water polo teams in California. Citrus fell just short of a win in the 12-9 loss as the Vaqueros found flaws in the Owls defense. Jessica Carmody led Citrus offensively with 3 goals that were not quite enough to put Citrus on top.

Their second win of the tournament came against the Vikings. In a close matchup, it was once again Jessica Carmody who helped put her team on top. Carmody was perfect when taking shots, as she went 5 for 5 in shooting. Her 5 goals helped edge out the Vikings from making a comeback in the final minutes of their 11-10 win. Defensively, goalie Sam Wilson contributed by saving 8 out of the 18 shots she faced in the game.

In their final game of the tournament, the Owls came close to another win in a tightly contested matchup. Citrus fell to the Rustlers 9-8, in what was initially a dominating match for the Rustlers. Golden West shutdown Citrus in the first quarter of the game as they scored all 9 of their goals in that quarter. The Owls quickly regrouped in the second quarter and rallied to score 7 goals in the last three quarters of the match, as well as preventing the Rustlers from scoring more goals in those final quarters. Citrus found a groove, but it was not enough to get them the win by the final whistle.

Playoffs are in sight for the Owls, as they have showcased this season to be a serious contender that should not be taken lightly. The Owls take on LA Pierce College at home on Wednesday the 31st at 3:30 in the first game of the WSC playoff tournament.
