Citrus Women's Water Polo faced off against two Southern California Regional opponents on Thursday at the Citrus Aquatics Center. The Owls took on Riverside City College and San Diego Mesa.
The match against Riverside was one the Owls had looked forward to, as Riverside is currently ranked #1 in California, and it proved to be a good matchup for the Citrus team. The Tigers lived up to their ranking as they asserted themselves early and often on the offensive end of the pool. Riverside would go up 4-0 in the 1st quarter, with the Owls sneaking in a goal just before the end of the period, making it 1-4 Riverside. The two teams battled intensely for very possession throughout the rest of the match. Citrus outscored the Tigers 3-2 in the 2nd period, which sent Citrus into halftime trailing 4-6. But the Tigers would come out in the 2nd half and extend their lead, and hang on to win the game 13-7.
Rachel Sherman put 3 shots in the back of the cage in the effort, and Samantha Godinho, Keylee Burke, Hannah Long, and Breanna Bailey each scored a goal. Goalie Dynalee Huerta recorded 8 saves on 21 shots faced.
The 2nd game of the day for the Owls was Dan Diego Mesa. The Owls controlled every facet of the game from start to finish, dominating on the offensive end, and putting up a brick wall on defense that lead to a 18-0 shutout. Goalie Ceraiah Riley was perfect in the match, stopping all 10 of the shots she faced. An impressive 12 players from the Citrus roster recorded goals in the one-sided victory. Leading the way with 3 goals were Taylor Marquez and Breanna Bailey; Annette Cruz and Cindy Rivera scored 2 goals; and Rachel Sherman, Francesca Vargas, Lauren Olivier, Keylee Burke, Hannah Long, Nataly Lazcano, Kortney Molle, and Nicole Phillips all chipped in a goal in the win.
The Owls move to 9-3 overall in 2019, and are currently 0-1 in conference. Citrus is back in action again tomorrow and Saturday, as the team will take a road trip to Cuesta College for the Rabobank Tourney. On Friday they'll take on Riverside again, San Joaquin Delta, and then two matches on Saturday with start times and opponents to be determined, based on Friday results.
