A Blazing Start

Ventura, CA — The Citrus College Cross Country program got their 2014 season off to a blazing start on Friday afternoon at the 2014 Ventura Invitational. The Owls posted one of their best ever finishes at the event on both the men's and women's side, as the men took fifth out of twelve competing teams, while the women finished fourth out of the nine squads that participated. 

 On the men's side, Citrus finished with 135 total points, just one off fellow WSC program Santa Barbara's 134, and four away from another conference mate and third place Cuesta College. Freshman Daniel Hernandez-Cabrera paced the Owl pack, finishing 17th overall with a time of 23:20.38. Freshman Alexander Evangelista was the next owl through the chute with a 27th place finish (23:52.54), while sophomore Diego Lopez grabbed 30th (24:04.19), and freshman Emmanuel Mercado rounded out the top five performances with a 37th place finish (24:23.14).

On the women's side, the Owls finished with 110 total points, and three Top 25 Individual performances. Freshman Antonella Curinga led the way in 9th place with a time of 22:53.10. Freshmen Janet Meza-Avila (15th | 23:34.11), Yaiza Crawford (23rd | 24:13.90), sophomore Jessica McMillen (34th | 24:52.42), and freshman Nataly Meza-Avila (45th | 25:38.91) rounded out the top five times.

Citrus will take next week of from racing, but will return to action on Friday September 12th, when they head North once again to participate in the 2014 Tour de Cuesta, hosted by Cuesta College at Fairbanks Cross Country Course in San Luis Obispo, CA. The first race is set for a 3:00 PM start.
