The Difference a Year Makes

Los Angeles, CA -- One year ago, the Citrus College Cross Country program, while improving, was still finishing in the back half of the Western State Conference pack, with the women finishing 12th and the men 10th at the 2013 WSC Preview. What a difference a year makes, as the Owls made a huge leap in 2014, with the women finishing 4th out of 14 competing schools and the men 5th out of 14 schools.

For the women, freshman Antonella Curinga continued to pace the pack, finishing 14th overall with a time of 20:12 on the 5K Course at Kenneth Hahn Regional Park. Sophomore Jessica McMillen came in behind her in 24th place with a time of 20:44, while freshman Janet Meza-Avila was the third Owl through the chute with a time of 21:22. Freshmen Yaiza Crawford and Lezly Morales rounded out the top five individual finishes for Citrus with times of 21:29 and 21:56 respectively.

For the men, it was also once again freshman Daniel Hernandez-Cabrera who cross the finish line first, in 11th place overall with a time of 20:25 on the 4-mile course. Sophomore Diego Lopez came in behind him in 21st place (20:54) paced closely by freshman Efren Alcala Jr. who finished 29th overall (21:15). Freshmen Luis Arriaga and Andrew Ballin rounded out the top five for Citrus with times of 21:26 and 21:34 respectively.

The Owls will get back after it this coming weekend when they take part in the Santa Barbara City College Cross Country Invitational at Leadbetter Beach. The first race is scheduled for a 3:00 PM start on Friday October 10th.
