Owls Drop Two at Glendale

Glendale, CA – The Citrus College Baseball team dropped two games at Glendale College on Thursday afternoon and evening in what is shaping up to be a pair of crucial contests in the Western State Conference East Division race. The Owls finished up the halted game from Tuesday in Glendora, falling to the Vaqueros 16-8, and then lost the second game of the "semi" double-header 9-5.
In the opening game, Citrus had fallen into an 11-1 hole by the time the game was halted in the bottom of the fourth inning. Citrus would put together its best effort to rally scoring four runs in the first inning and two-thirds at Glendale to cut it to 11-5. Four runs by the Vaqueros over the sixth and seventh innings more than sealed the deal though despite three runs in the bottom of the seventh for the Owls. Freshman Donoyvn Curiel finished 4 for 5 with three runs, and sophomore Marcos Campos was 3 for 5 with a pair of runs. No other player had more than one hit.
In the second game, Citrus briefly take a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by freshman Jesse Villalobos in the top of the second, but Glendale had an answer via a sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning. Citrus would go back in front 3-1 after an RBI double by freshman Kristian Scott and an RBI single by Villalobos in the top of the third, and then added yet another run thanks to an RBI triple by Campos in the top of the fourth that made it 4-1.
Glendale would tie the game up in the bottom of the fourth with three scores, but Citrus would once again surge back in front when sophomore Kyosuke Ushimaru scored on a fielder's choice by sophomore Jacob Gafford in the top of the sixth. That would be the last score for the Owls on the day, while the Vaqueros went and scored five unanswered on their way to the 9-5 win.
In the loss, Campos, Scott, Villalobos, Ushimaru, and freshman Benjamin Aguilera each had a pair of hits. Villalobos drove in two, while all five runs were scored by different players.
With the two losses, Citrus drops to 12-11-1 on the year and 4-3 in WSC East play. The Owls will close out the regular season series with Glendale on Saturday afternoon at home at 1:00 PM.
