Santa Ana, CA - The Citrus College Football team nearly scored 50 points for the second week, and the defense came up with plenty of big plays as the Owls improved to 2-0 with a 49-21 rout of Santa Ana College. It's the first time the Owls have started off 2-0 since 2013.
It didn't take long for Citrus to get going as they scored less than six minutes into the game after a five yard touchdown run by freshman running back Devin Floyd. The Owls would add seven more points just a little over two minutes later when sophomore quarterback Brian Meyette found sophomore wide out Gino Mastandrea for a 12 yard strike to put Citrus up two scores.
Santa Ana would get on the board on the very next drive to close out the first quarter, but the Owls outscored the Dons 21-7 in the second quarter thanks to touchdowns by freshman Todd Greene (11 yard run), Floyd (39 yard run), and Andre Long (nine yard touchdown reception from Meyette). By halftime Citrus was in control leading 35-14.
In the third quarter, Citrus would strike twice, getting a two yard TD run by freshman Daniel Williams and a 42 yard catch and run by Greene, this time from sophomore quarterback Zachary Labar that gave the Owls a 49-14 cushion. The Citrus defense proved stout in the second half, with Santa Ana's only score of the half coming on a 37 yard fumble return to the house by the Dons early in the fourth quarter.
In the win, Citrus was paced by Greene's 86 yards rushing on seven carries (12.3 ypc) for one touchdown. Greene also caught two passes for a total 53 yards and that one score. Floyd carried the ball eight times for 71 yards and two touchdowns, while Mastandrea caught team high six passes for 75 yards and the score.
On the defensive side of the ball, Citrus get eight tackles each from freshman Henry Pigee and sophomore Samuel Edwards and Michael Orantes Jr. Freshman safety Jeremiah Vasquez added six tackles, and an interception that he returned 89 yards coming up five yards shy of a pick six. Sophomore Carlos Delgado also nabbed his fourth interception of the season.
The Owls will be back in action on Saturday night when they hit the road again this time for a trip to San Bernardino Valley College. Kick-off is set for 6:00 PM.
