Citrus' Comeback Cut Short

After trailing by two possessions in the first quarter, Citrus College put together a valiant comeback effort in the second half but couldn't overcome Antelope Valley College Saturday night.

The Fighting Owls drop to 2-3 on the season, while the Marauders improve to 2-2.

Citrus finished with 326 passing yards but -6 rushing yards for 320 yards of total offense.

Adam Urena was 33-for-53 with three touchdown passes. Jeremiah Flores, Jacob Ray and Blake Davis each caught a touchdown for the Owls.

Defensively, Kendall Henderson grabbed an interception for seven yards and had 12 tackles, including 10 solo efforts.

AVC took a 10-0 lead in the first quarter and held onto it heading into halftime. Citrus came out of the break looking to break through offensively and got on the board with just over five minutes left in the third. Urena found Ray for a 38-yard pass before Ivan Castro's point after touchdown kick was good, 10-7.

The Marauders scored again before the period ended, but the Owls made their way back to the redzone and Flores caught a Urena pass in the endzone to keep the Owls within one touchdown, 17-14.

Once again, however, AVC's offense was too good and scored back-to-back touchdowns with four minutes left in the game, 31-14.

The Owls kept fighting and scored in an eight-play drive off a Davis touchdown, but couldn't strike again to drop the game 31-21.

Citrus looks to regroup over a bye weekend before hosting Orange Coast College on Saturday, Oct. 16, to start Western State Conference action.
