Owls Upend Rams

Victorville, CA - The Citrus College Women's Basketball team picked up their second win of the WSC East season on Wednesday night when they upended host Victor Valley College 68-57. The Owls out rebounded the Rams and shot 42.9% from the floor to secure the win. 

 The Owls got things off to a strong start as they went 5 for 11 from the floor and 7 for 10 from the charity stripe in the opening quarter, as they jumped out to a 18-16 lead. Citrus committed just four turnovers in the quarter and got four rebounds from sophomore Elizabeth Rios, including three on the offensive glass in the opening frame. 

In the second quarter, things slowed down significantly for Citrus as they were held to just eight points as they headed into the break knotted up at 26-26 with the Rams. The Owls went just 4 of 18 from the floor and didn't get to the free-throw line at all in the quarter. Citrus quickly turned things around in the third, when they opened things up with a 20-0 run to take a 46-35 lead. Victor Valley would outscore Citrus by one in the final three minutes, but the Owls held onto a solid eight point lead headed into the final quarter.

In the fourth, Victor Valley would get the Owl lead down to five with 1:16 to go. Needing a basket, Citrus got a huge one from freshman Cassandra Martinez who took a pass from sophomore Alissa Magan and drained a bucket from the left wing to put Citrus back up eight. Victor Valley never got any closer. 

In the win, Citrus was paced by sophomore Marisa Brown who scored a game high 31 points with 19 of those 31 points coming in the second half. Brown also added 10 boards, matching teammate Jessica Rosas for the game high. Rosas also finished with 15 points. 

With the win, Citrus improves to 6-17 overall and 2-5 in WSC East play. The Owls will try to keep things going on Saturday when they host Glendale College at 5:00 PM. ​
