Third Place 3-peat Not in the Cards For Citrus

Women's Basketball competed this weekend at the Cypress College Lady Charger Classic where they faced off against two teams ranked in the top 6 in Southern California. The Owls would go 1-2 on the weekend, dropping the consolation final to host Cypress College. It would be the third straight consolation final in as many tournaments for Citrus, but this time they would fall just short, 61-64.

The Owls began tournament play on Friday against Grossmont College. Things would go smoothly for the Owls as they put together a quality team win over the Griffins, 75-65. Marisol Chavez-Delgado was in the zone for Citrus as she dropped a double double bomb with 28 points and 12 rebounds to lead all players in both categories. Also putting up good numbers was Kyannie Brown who chipped in 16 points and 7 rebounds. 

Saturday, the Owls would face off against East Los Angeles, who is ranked #5 in Southern California. Citrus would put up a fight against ranked ELAC, but would come up short, losing the game 68-80. Standout performances for the Owls included Chavez Delgado with 12 points, 7 rebounds and a pair of steals, and Jezteni Espinoza who contributed a well rounded 11 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Destiny Dent and Brown both scored double digits with 12 and 11, respectively. 

The final game of the tournament brought the Owls face to face with 6th ranked host Cypress College. Espinoza, Brown and Diana Navarro all scored double digits en route to the 61-64 loss. Espinoza and Navarro each drained 4 three pointers for the Owls, contributing to the Citrus 32% team three point shooting percentage. The tale of the tape seemed to be rebounding and second chance opportunities, especially on the offensive end, where Cypress outboarded the Owls 52-36 overall and 25-14 on the offensive glass. 

Citrus will regroup and hit the hardwood again as it visits Chaffey College, who is ranked in the top 20 in SoCal, tonight at 6:30 PM.
