Citrus College opened the new year with a 59-48 loss to West LA, almost a month since its last competition.

The Owls slip to 9-6 on the year and open Western State Conference action at 0-1. The Wildcats improve to 6-7 overall and 1-1 in conference.

Giselle Garcia-Nunez led the Owls with a double-double, finishing with 18 points (8-for-12) and 10 rebounds. Katherine Goostrey followed with 15 points.

Both teams struggled to get going early with West LA holding an 8-5 lead after the first 10 minutes.

While the Wildcats got going, the Owls couldn't quite find their rhythm from the floor, finishing the night with a 29.3 field goal percentage, including 20-percent from beyond the arc. Citrus took care of its chances at the charity stripe, however, hitting 10 of its 11 free throws, but it wasn't enough to overcome West LA.

Citrus looks to bounce back on the road as it heads to LA Valley on Monday, tipping off at 7:00 p.m.
