Women's Soccer Playoff Preview: SoCal Regional Championships

The table is set for the Women's Soccer Southern California Regional Championships, and the Fighting Owls are right in the mix. Citrus has earned a berth into the 19-team tournament bracket as the #10 seed. The Owls will face off against #7 Rio Hondo College this Saturday at 4:00 PM, Rio Hondo will play host as they are the higher seed.

The 2018 regular season was a little bit of a Jeckyll and Hyde, as the Owls came out of the gates firing throughout the first half of the season, but struggled to keep the winning ways going in conference play. But Citrus found a way too battle themselves into position amongst the top teams in the state and put themselves in contention for a regional title and a berth to the state championships.

The Owls finished regular season play 10-6-4 overall, with a 2-4-2 WSC East conference mark. Several players have been integral to the success of the team in 2018. The Owls leading scorer, Ruth MacDonaugh, a Freshman forward, netted 11 goals in her rookie season; Isabela DeLeon, also a Freshman, scored 7 goals and added 4 assists; Kiana Ramirez scored 6 goals and had a pair of assists. Goalie Olivia Handy recorded 4 shutouts on the year and charted 91 saves for a save percentage of .843. Her save percentage earned her the #3 ranking for goalies in the WSC. Her 91 saves are good enough to put her in the #5 spot overall.

With a win Saturday, Citrus would move on to the quarterfinals and play the winner of #2 Santiago Canyon who is undefeated in 2018, and an opponent yet to be determined (Note: play-in rounds start today for lower seeds. Santiago Canyon will face the winner of #15 Bakersfield and #18 Golden West).
