Oceanside, CA -- Freshman Alexandra Contreras highlighted a strong Citrus College Cross Country effort on Friday afternoon, in the Owls' season opener at the Palomar Invitational. The talented freshman finished fifth overall in the women's race and helped Citrus to a 6th place team finish.

Contreras used a blazing 6:37 mile pace to finish the 5K Course in a time of 20:32. She finished just 22 seconds off the first place finisher in Friday's race. Sophomore Julia Galvez had a good showing as well. Galvez was the second Owl through the shoot with a time of 22:04, good enough for 24th place overall. Freshmen Jackeline Perez (22:35 | 32nd), Ariana Cordero (23:43 | 48th), and Krystalynn Bazan (23:44 (49th) rounded out the top five times for the Owls.

On the men's side, freshman Juan Cruz led the charge, finishing the four mile course in a time of 24:07, the 33rd best time of the day. Fellow frosh Jerrick Basallo came in just behind him with a time of 24:34 (41st), and sophomore Michael Tejada was close on his heels with a time of 25:19 (49th). Freshman Salvador Marquez and sophomore Wesley Ewart wrapped up the top five for Citrus on Friday with times of 26:12 (58th) and 26:20 (59th) respectively.

The Owls will be right back out on the course next week when they take part in the Southern California Preview, which draws the best teams from Southern California and some of the top schools from the North as well. The women's race will kick off the day at Central Park in Santa Clarita, CA at 9:30 AM.
