Santa Clarita, CA -- The Citrus College Cross Country program faced their toughest early season challenge on Friday afternoon when they participated in the Southern California Preview meet hosted by College of the Canyons. The Owls took on the top teams from SoCal as well as the best team from NorCal and had some promising results.

On the men's side it was freshman Diego Lopez who sparked the Owls' effort. Lopez was the top finisher for Citrus on either side, with a 44th place individual finish, crossing the four mile course finish line in a time of 22:54.24. About a minute and a half behind him was fellow frosh Juan Cruz, who came in 97th and posted a time of 24:13.76. Freshmen Jerrick Basallo (24:58.74), sophomore Michael Tejada (35:53.17), and freshman Salvador Marquez (26:16.80) finished out the top five for the men. As a team, Citrus placed 22 out of the 30 competing squads.

On the women's side it was freshman Jackeline Perez who crossed the finish line first, finishing 117th overall in a time of 22:47.37 in the 5K run. Sophomore Marilyn Meza came in the chute just behind her with a time of 23:50.84, while a trio of freshman in Krystalynn Bazan (24:27.17), Carol Hinostro (25:57.82), and Raquel Ponce (26:13.67) rounded out the remaining top five spots.

Citrus gets right back out on the course next weekend when they take part locally in the Foothill Invitational. The race is set for 10:30 AM start at Guasti Regional Park in Ontario, CA on Friday September 20th.
