Owls Start Season Off with a Splash

Citrus College got the 2021 season started with three games at the Southwestern Mini Tournament Saturday and went 3-for-3 to begin the year undefeated. The Fighting Owls beat San Diego Miramar 16-10 and Grossmount College 15-9, before capping the day with a 10-point victory over Southwestern College 23-13.

 

Citrus def. San Diego Miramar 16-10

The Owls found themselves trailing 4-3 after the first period but turned things around in the second. Julian Nicholas scored the tying goal before Ian Tauer put Citrus in front halfway through the period.

Citrus added five more goals in the third to increase its lead to 13-8, while only conceding one goal to the Jets. Tauer scored twice again in the fourth to help the Owls secure the 16-10 victory.

Matteo Velasquez made five saves and had three assists in the game.

 

Citrus def. Grossmount College 15-9

After winning the first game of the season, Citrus carried momentum over and grabbed a 15-9 victory over Grossmount College.

Grossmount scored first, but Breck Weiny answered back for the Owls. Citrus carried a 4-2 lead into the second off goals from Nicholas, Tauer and Matty Roebuck.

The Griffins took control of the second, taking a 7-6 lead into halftime.

Grossmount capitalized first in the third, but Citrus responded with six unanswered goals to jump in front 12-8. Roebuck rattled in a goal with just under three minutes left in the third to tie the game at 8-8 and just 30 seconds later, Nicholas struck again to put the Owls in front.

Velasquez came up with nine saves and dished out two assists to secure the win.

 

Citrus def. Southwestern College 23-13

The Owls scored six goals in the first period, including two each from Tauer and Weiny. Southwestern pulled within two at halftime, 10-8, but Citrus came out fired up in the second half and outscored the jaguars 13-5.

Nicholas upped his tally to four goals in the game with three in the second half. Tauer and Thomas Woolrich each found the back of the cage twice in the fourth.

Jacob Perez made 17 saves in the game to keep the Owls in front. 

 

The Owls make their home debut on Wednesday, taking on El Camino College at 3:00 p.m.
