Citrus Scores Big At Home

Citrus College came out firing at the Citrus "Under the Lights" Mini and grabbed two wins, a 23-7 victory over Crafton Hills and a 17-9 win over Rio Hondo.

The Owls move to 9-1 on the year with the pair of victories.

Ian Tauer and Peter Herrera led the Owls with five goals apiece. Jullian Nichols and Thomas Woolrich each netted four goals, while Cole Jerry scored a pair and Matty Roebuck Abram Villegas and Breck Weiny each capitalized once.

It was all Citrus as soon as the first game started as the Owls opened on a 9-0 scoring spree before Crafton Hills could get on the board. Tauer scored three of his goals in the period, while Weiny, Herrera, Nichols, and Woolrich also got in on the scoring.

The Owls added four unanswered goals in the second to swim into halftime with a 13-2 lead.

Crafton Hills started the third with the first goal of the period, but Herrera, Nichols (twice) and Tauer each rattled in a goal.

With just 51 seconds left in the fourth, Woolrich put the final dagger in to seal the 23-7 victory.

Eric Ramirez made eight saves to pick up the win.

In the nightcap, Nichols led the Owls with five goals and four assists. Weiny added four goals, while Tauer had another hat trick, along with four assists. Roebuck (two), Andres Hernandez, Woolrich, and Villegas also scored against Rio Hondo.

Nichols got things going in the first period, cashing in on a pass from Herrera. Less than a minute later Weiny capitalized on a Tauer assist. Tauer also found the cage to put the Owls 3-0 before Rio Hondo could get on the board.

With about a minute and a half left before halftime, Hernandez scored an unassisted goal to put the Owls up by six, 10-4.

Rio Hondo managed to pull within 11-7, but Weiny scored back-to-back goals before the third ended to increase Citrus' lead 13-7.

The Owls scored four-straight goals in the fourth to all but seal the win, allowing just one goal in the final 14 seconds to end the game with the 19-7 victory.

Citrus has a quick turnaround, playing in the Cerritos Mini Tournament on Friday, taking on Orange Coast College at 12:30 p.m.
