The Softball Blog: A Journey

Throughout the 2013 CCCAA post-season, Citrus College sophomore Katherine Cunningham will be blogging for CitrusOwls.com. Today's installment is the first installment of the blog.

To be where we are today has truly been a journey. In the beginning of season it was questionable if we would even make it to the playoffs. As the season progressed, we turned it around and ended the year second in conference. We are just getting started. Coach reminds us all the time that timing is important and lucky for us we are hot right now- talk about perfect timing. I am really excited to show our opponents what we have in store for them.

I think what gets me the most fired up is that we have girls on the team coming from the bench and playing spectacularly. Everyone on the roster is vital to OUR team and I think that is our secret weapon because we can all get the job done. Our team has so much talent; each game we have a different star of the game. There is always someone different stepping up and getting that clutch hit, diving catch, or double play. We all have our own role or skill, if you will, which sets us apart and makes us unique.

Individually we have all gone through so much this year and being able to have teammates who are there for you to pick you up creates trust. We truly are a family… We see each other even more than we see our own family, we fight like a family, and we love like a family. The coaches have established that family-like mentality in the foundation of all the Citrus Teams they have coached, but this year I think it may have affected us the most. I can honestly say that Citrus Softball has been one of the greatest experiences and I think the playoffs will add that much more because I expect great things from us.  

I think we will go far in playoffs not just because we are hot at a key time, but because we have passion for the game. Most teams are probably getting burnt out because it has been a long season, but we are continuing to work hard; we are doing what it takes.  I think a major component in regards to passion is that fact that a majority of the girls are sophomores.  As sophomores, we know our career as Citrus is coming to an end and because of that it truly enhances the passion because we know it will all be over soon. Not to mention the fact that we just got a little taste last year so it makes us hungrier this year. We want it that much more. I think the key for us is team work because when one gets going we all get going; we are contagious with one and other. I believe if we win one inning at a time and play fundamentally sound we are untouchable.
