Ventura, CA - The Citrus College Softball team experienced one good and one bad day at the 2016 Ventura College Tournament. Things got off to a great start on Saturday as Citrus posted wins over Allan Hancock and Rio Hondo Colleges. Sunday wasn't as friendly though as the Owls suffered losses to Cuesta and Mt. San Jacinto Colleges.

The weekend started off with the match-up against Allan Hancock. The Owls scored runs in the first and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead. The Bulldogs would answer with a pair in the top of the fifth, but the Owls scored the game winning run in the bottom of the sixth thanks to an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Haley Gomez. Gomez finished 2 for 4 in the game, while sophomore starting pitcher Makaele Moore not only got the win in the circle, but also went 3 for 3 at the plate with a run and an RBI.

The Owls continued things a little later in the afternoon with a 12-2 five innings victory over Rio Hondo. The Owls scored their first nine runs in the first two innings, as sophomore Autumn Bartholomy picked up a pitching victory. Sophomore Kali Smith was 3 for 4 at the plate with a trio of runs scored.

Things turned South in the opening tilt on Sunday against Cuesta. The Owls gave up four runs in the top of the first inning to the Cougars and never really recovered. Smith and freshman Celine Spathias led the way at the plate as each recorded a pair of hits.

It only got worse in the final game of the weekend, when the Owls were mercied by Mt. San Jacinto in five innings 12-4. The Owls tried to mount a late rally in the top of the fifth with three of their four runs scored, but a run by the Eagles in the bottom half of the fifth ended things early. Bartholomy was the only Owl with more than one hit, going 2 for 2 with a run and an RBI.

The Owls will get back to conference play on Tuesday when they host Santa Monica College in a WSC Blue Double-Header.
