Torrance, CA - The Citrus College Softball team, ranked #10 in the State, fell to State #6 El Camino College twice on Friday afternoon. The Owls lost in the bottom of the seventh inning of Game #1, 12-11 before losing in six-innings in Game #2 12-4.
The Owls got the start they wanted in the opening contest, getting a two-run bomb to right-center from sophomore Jade Nua in the top of the first to give Citrus an early 2-0 lead. El Camino would get one run back in the bottom of the first however, and then take the lead in the bottom of the second with a pair of unearned scores that made it 3-2.
The Warrior lead would be brief as sophomore Celine Spathias tied the game up i the top of the third, with a double laced to center field. Freshman Seanna Jimenez would follow that up with a 2-RBI single to center that made it 5-3. In the top of the fifth, Jimenez, freshman Jocelyn Alvarado, and freshman Jacquelyn Preciado would all drive in runs. The Owls also got a pair of unearned runs in the same inning as they surged to a 10-3 lead.
El Camino would hack away at the lead, scoring three in the fourth and four in the sixth to tie the game up at 10-10. Sophomore Karissa Martinez would give Citrus the lead back for a short time in the top of the seventh via an RBI single back up the middle of the field, but two scores in the bottom of the seventh, doomed the Owls.
Nua would finish a team best 3-for-3 on the game, scoring twice and driving in two. Jimenez finished 2-for-4 with a run and a trio of RBIs, while Spathias 2-for-4 with a pair of scores.
In the second game, Citrus fell into a quick hole, as El Camino scored five runs in the bottom of the first. The Owls would rally with a three-spot in the top of the second, getting two runs on a double to left by Preciado and an RBI single by Martinez to make it 3-5. In the top of the third, Nua would lift a sacrifice fly to left that brought home freshman Valerie Ortiz, to cut the deficit to one, but El Camino scored five in the third and two in the sixth, while the Owls failed to plate another run.
No player would finish with more than one hit in the second game. Preciado would end up 1-for-2 with a run and a pair of RBIs. The two losses would drop Citrus to a 16-11 mark overall.
