Owls Take Hold of Second Place With Mercy of Canyons

Glendora, CA - In an important Western State Conference East Division match-up, the Owls took hold of second place in the conference with a 11-3 six-inning mercy rule win over visiting College of the Canyons. Citrus came up with 12 hits, and held a tough Cougar offense to just three scores in the win.

Both teams came up empty in the first frame, but Canyons jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second with a pair of runs, one unearned. Citrus rallied in the bottom half of the inning getting an RBI double to center field by freshman Seanna Jimenez to tie the game up at two runs a piece.

In the third, Citrus took their first lead when freshman Jocelyn Alvarado laced a single back up the middle of the field, plating sophomore Jade Nua and making it 3-2. Canyons would tie the game up back in the top of the fifth, but Citrus blew the game wide open in the bottom half of that inning with six runs.

Freshman Valerie Ortiz would get the ball rolling with an RBI single back up the middle of the field. Nua would follow that up with a ground-rule double that drove in two, while freshman Molly Montell picked up a bases loaded RBI walk. Alvarado would add an infield RBI single, while sophomore Celine Spathias scored the innings final run thanks to a Canyons error.

In the bottom of the sixth, Spathias would end the game an inning early, when she doubled down the left field line bring home Ortiz and freshman Danielle Dominguez. In the win, Jimenez and Alvarado both went 3-for-4, while Nua was 2-for-2. Sophomore Karissa Martinez went 2-for-3, and Dominguez earned her 15th win of the year.

With the win, Citrus improves to 24-12 overall and 10-3 in WSC East play. The Owls will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Glendale College for a double-header with the host Vaqueros. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM.
