Vikings Eliminate Owls

Vikings Eliminate Owls

The Citrus College softball team's season came to an end Saturday afternoon as they lost 5-0 in the second game of a best two out of three series against Long Beach City College. The Owls finished their impressive run with a 25-16 overall record and their first playoff appearance since 2019.

The Owls had seven hits from five different batters but were unable to advance any base runners home, leaving seven runners on base in the game. Caitlin Kelley had an outstanding game going 2 for 2 from the plate and pitched five innings in the circle for the Owls, allowing no runs. Kylie Ruiz also had a multi-hit game for the Owls, going 2-for-3 from the plate, while Samantha Meyndert, Desiree Loza, and Marissa Ramirez all added a hit.

The Vikings came out swinging and took an early lead over the Owls, scoring two runs in the first inning and three more runs in the second inning, making the game 5-0.

The Owls started the bottom of the third inning with back-to-back hits from Marissa Ramirez and Kylie Ruiz, but unfortunately, they were unable to advance their base runners as the Vikings retired the next three batters in order, taking away an opportunity for the Owls to get back in the game and leaving two runners on base.

Caitlin Kelley and the Owls' defense continued to keep the Vikings off the scoreboard and had another opportunity offensively in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out in the fourth, Kelley singled to left field, and a batter later Desiree Loza singled to left-center, giving the Owls a runner in scoring position. Again, the Vikings' defense held the Owls scoreless, getting the next two batters to pop up for an out and flyout, keeping the Owls off the board.

Following that, both teams' offenses struggled to generate any momentum with hits. The Vikings went on to secure a commanding 5-0 win, knocking out the Owls in the opening round of the 3C2A Southern California Regional Playoffs.
