Glendora, CA -- The Citrus College Women's Basketball program put together one of its most efficient shooting performances of the year on Wednesday evening when they hosted Bakersfield College in their Western State Conference South Division opener. The Owls shot 47% from the floor, 42.9% from the three-point line, and 77.8% at the charity stripe in an 85-63 victory.

Citrus would use an early run to begin to distance themselves from the Renegades on the night. Trailing 5-4 after just a minute and a half of play, the Owls used a 10-0 run, getting 8 of their 10 points via a lay-up as they asserted themselves early. Citrus would keep Bakersfield around that deficit for the remainder of the first quarter, taking a 23-13 lead after one.

In the second, Bakersfield gave Citrus their best push, pulling to within five points of the Owl lead twice in the quarter. The first time was about midway through when the Renegades made it 21-26. After a few lost possessions by each team, sophomore Janae Chamois would lead Citrus out of the woods with a lay-up and a pair of free-throws to extend the lead back to nine. Bakersfield would rally with buckets on their next two possessions to pull back to within five at 25-30, but a triple by sophomore Natalie Gutierrez assured that the Renegades would never get any closer.

Citrus would go on to lead by 12 at the break, and 22 after three thanks to a 26-16 third quarter. Bakersfield would match each of the Owls' points in the fourth, as Citrus settled in for the 22 point win. Chamois and Gutierrez would each score a game high 17 in the victory. Gutierrez also added 10 boards, matching sophomore Allison Zalin for the team high. Zalin also chipped in with 13 points and tied a program record for blocks, turning away eight shots on the evening. Freshman Marisa Brown rounded out the highlights with 10 points off the bench.

With the win, Citrus improves to 8-6 on the season and more importantly 1-0 in WSC South play. The Owls will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Antelope Valley College (6-10, 1-0) for a 5:00 PM tip-off.
