Glendora, CA — The Citrus College Baseball team played host to Los Angeles Valley College in a crucial WSC South meeting on Thursday afternoon. The Owls got some strong early signs, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the first inning on their way to a 12-2 win over the Monarchs.

The Owls got it going right away, as sophomore Anthony Virgen and freshman Michael Carlos opened up the bottom of the first with singles. Sophomore Taylor Grace followed that up with a single through the right side that plated Virgen. After sophomore Troy Resch got on via an error, sophomore Mark Segat cleared the bases with a triple down the right field line.

Freshman Jonathan Ayala got in on the act with a double down the right field line that scored Segat, while three at bats later, a triple by freshman Rudy Casarez III and another single by Virgen made it 7-0 after their hits brought in sophomore Shawn Sweeney and Casarez respectively.

The seven runs was plenty of cushion for sophomore Nicholas Sergi who took the Monarchs to task at the plate. Sergio went seven strong, giving up just four total hits, one run, and one walk, while striking out two, winning his seventh game of the season.

Citrus would add five more runs over the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. Resch picked up an RBI with a single to center field that scored Grace in the fifth, while back to back bases loaded RBI walks from Segat and Ayala made it 10-1.

Valley would score another run in the top of the eighth, but the Owls more than got it back in the bottom half of the inning with RBI's from freshman Maximilian Reyes and Jeremyn "J.P." Hopkins.

With the win, Citrus improves to 16-12-1 overall and 9-5 in WSC South play. The Owls will play host against the Monarchs on Saturday, but will serve as the visiting team as Valley is without a home field this season. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM.
