Baseball Finishes Sweep of West LA

Glendora, CA - For just the second time this season, the Citrus College Baseball team put together a sweep of an opponent in Western State Conference South Division play. The Owls held off a late rally by visiting West Los Angeles College in a 3-2 win.

The Owls scored all three of their runs on the day in the first two innings. The first came via an RBI single to third base off the bat of freshman Dominic Baca that plated sophomore Rudy Casarez III.

The other two would come in the bottom of the second when another hard hit ball to third base, this time by freshman Marcos Campos, scored freshman Garrett Barnes and eventually Casarez after the third baseman from West LA tried to make a near impossible play with a deep throw from his knees towards first base.

With the offense providing him a small but manageable cushion early on, freshman Roberto Baldanebro (5-5) did enough on the hill to keep the Wildcats at bay. Baldanebro surrendered two hits, gave up just one walk and a run, while fanning five batters. Baldanebro's only run he gave up was on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth.

Baldanebro would turn the ball over to sophomore Art Corona Jr. in the top of the sixth. Corona worked a perfect two innings, striking out a pair of batters. Freshman Joshua Aguilar would take over in the top of the eighth and worked through some trouble, but did enough to get the save.

Aguilar would give up a score in the top of the eighth, with West LA scoring on a sacrifice fly to center field. In the top of the ninth, West LA would threaten again, moving a runner all the way to third with one out. Aguilar settled down though and got a fly out to right, and then got a little help in the final out when a tailing line drive to right field was caught by sophomore Joshua Chua in diving fashion to win the game.

With the win, Citrus improves to 14-18-1 overall and 7-11 in WSC South play. The Owls will wrap up their 2016 season next week with their three game series with Bakersfield College. The opening game will be on Tuesday at 3:00 PM at Bakersfield College.
