Citrus College opened Western State Conference action Tuesday against the College of the Canyons but dropped a close 5-4 battle.

The Owls slip to 8-8 overall and begin conference play at 0-1, while the Cougars sit at 8-8 on the year and 1-0 in the WSC.

Citrus out-hit Canyons 11-to-8 but couldn't overcome a big third inning where the Cougars scored four runs to jump out to a 5-1 lead. The Owls rallied and plated two runs in the ninth to pull within one, but the visitors held on for the win.

Jason Armendariz led the Owls with three hits (3-for-5) and two RBIs. Connor Green (2-for-5) and Sean Rooney (2-for-2) each had two hits, while Mario Catalan, Jordan Sheridan, Luke Willison, and Jordan Quintero also finished with a hit for Citrus.

The Owls and Cougars continue the series on Thursday at 2 p.m. at the College of the Canyons and are back in Glendora on Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest.
