Owls Secure Sweep

Owls Secure Sweep

For the first time this season, Citrus College put together a sweep of a Western State South Conference opponent. The Owls would hold off a late rally on the road against West Los Angeles College in a 4-3 victory. The Owls improve to 16-17 overall and 8-7 in conference, while the Wildcats fall to 7-26 overall and 2-13 in conference.

The Owls would have seven hits from five different batters. Mario Catalan and Jason Armendariz would lead the way for the Owls, both going 2-for-4 from the plate and each adding an RBI. Sean Rooney went 1-for-3 from the plate with an RBI and scored a run. On the mound, Reece Harney would pitch eight innings, giving up one run and striking out three batters.

For the first five innings, neither team had very much going on offensively. The Owls had zero hits and the Wildcats had only four. The Owls would change that in the top of the sixth inning as Jordan Quintero had a leadoff single. A batter later would lay down a sacrifice bunt giving the Owls a runner in scoring position before Sean Rooney would give the Owls a 1-0 lead off an RBI single. Rooney would steal second and Mario Catalan would drive him in with a single, giving the Owls a 2-0 lead.

The Wildcats would finally break through in the bottom of the sixth as well with a run of their own, making the game 2-1. The Owls answered that run with a leadoff single by Jordan Sheridan and with the help of an error from the Wildcats, Sheridan advanced all the way to third base. A batter later, Jason Armendariz would single to give the Owls a 3-1 lead.

The Owls would add another run in the ninth on a passed ball that scored Jason Armendariz, giving the Owls a 4-1 lead. As it turned out, the passed ball would be the difference in the game as the Wildcats scored two runs in the ninth and lost 4-3, giving the Owls the sweep.

Citrus will be back in action Saturday morning as they host Victor Valley College in a non-conference game. First pitch is set for 10:00 a.m.
