#19 Owls Remain Hot With Fifth-Straight Win
No. 19-ranked Citrus College kept hot with its fifth-straight victory, grinding out a 14-10 win over Antelope Valley College.
The Owls improved to 5-0 on the year with the win, matching their best start to the season since 2007. Citrus later had to forfeit the first win of the 2007 season due to an ineligible athlete. The Marauders drop to 2-3 on the year.
As a team, Citrus finished with 359 total offensive yards, including 325 passing yards. Adam Urena went 29-for-52 and threw two touchdown passes to tie the Citrus career record with 45 touchdown passes.
It was a defensive battle for the first 25 minutes as neither team could get on the scoreboard. The Owls finally broke through with five minutes left before halftime as Urena found his brother Austin Urena for a nine-yard pass and Kosuke Kayahara kicked in the extra point to put Citrus up 7-0 at the break.
The Owls came out fired up and scored in their first drive on offense. Adam Urena found Jesse Carmona for a 28-yard pass to get into the red zone before once again connecting with Carmona, who spun past his defender and into the endzone for an 11-yard touchdown. Once again, Kayahara tacked on an extra point to extend the Owls' lead to 14-0.
AVC made things interesting with a touchdown in the third and a field goal in the fourth to pull within single digits, 14-10.
With 1:25 left on the clock, the Marauders looked to pull some magic out and managed to get close to Owl territory at their own 44. The Citrus defense held firm, however, and didn't let the Marauders past the halfway line to seal the 14-10 victory.
Defensively, Jailen "JJ" Edwards led the Owls with eight total tackles on the night, including seven solo stops, and a sack. Luke Pruitt finished with two sacks and two quarterback hurries.
The Owls have a bye next weekend and are back in action at Orange Coast College on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 1 p.m.
