Men’s Soccer Drops Season Opener

Glendora, CA (Men's Soccer) -- The Citrus College Men's Soccer team (0-1) dropped their season opener to the defending Foothill Conference champs San Bernardino Valley (1-0) on Tuesday evening. The Owls were outshot by the Wolverines 15-6, but were able to keep it close in a 0-1 loss.

San Bernardino proved to be the aggressors from the get go on Tuesday garnering a corner just three minutes into the game and taking five of the first six shots of the contest. The only Owl shot in that beginning stretch came when freshman Ryo Takamine meekly headed a ball in San Bernardino's goal's direction in the 19th minute.

The Wolverines continued to apply pressure in that first half drawing a penalty kick in the 34th minute when San Bernardino's Anthony Castaneda drew a foul in the goal box after he beat the last Citrus defender deep. Shortly thereafter, Castaneda kicked the ball low and in the right hand corner of the next past the outstretched hands of Citrus keeper William Beltran for a 1-0 lead.   At the half, the Wolverines had outshot the Owls 9-3.

In the second half, San Bernardino sat back and let Citrus do most of the work. Despite that fact, the Wolverines outshot Citrus 5-3. The Owls would really only have two solid chances on the night. The first would come in the first half when Citrus got a free kick deep in San Bernardino territory. Sophomore midfielder Omar Nunez would take the kick and drill the crossbar.

Citrus' next best chance was late in the second half. Sophomore forward Josh Luevanos would receive the ball on the right side of the field. Luevanos took the ball deep in to the box and then fired a rocket towards the right corner of the goal. The ball hit the post, and Citrus was left empty handed.

The Owls will continue their 2012 slate on Friday when they take part in their first road contest of the season. Citrus will travel down to Cuyamaca College with the start time set for 4:00 PM.
