Walnut, CA -- It was a 50/50 weekend for the Citrus College Men's Water Polo program at the Mt. San Antonio College Tournament. The Owls won two, lost two, and were competitive in all four contests against Mt. SAC, Chaffey, Palomar, and Santa Ana.

The Owls opened up the weekend with the tournament's host Mt. SAC. The Mounties staked themselves to a one point lead after one quarter, and began to pull away after the second going up 9-5. Citrus matched Mt. SAC goal for goal in the third, but the Mounties pulled away by doubling up the Owls in the fourth on their way to a 19-12 win. Sophomore Robert "Austin" Sanchez was solid in the loss, scoring four goals and handing out an assist. Freshman Patrick Phommachanh added three goals and a pair of assists.

Later in the day, Citrus rallied nicely with an 18-10 win over nearby Chaffey College. The Owls ran out to a 7-2 lead after the first eight minutes and never really looked back. At the half, Citrus led 11-4, and the Owls outscored the Panthers in every single quarter, except for the fourth, when each team scored once. Freshman Charles Ortega had a monster game, scoring seven goals. Freshman Seth Adams added four, and Sanchez another three.

On day two, Citrus again started with a tough L against Palomar. The Owls were held scoreless in the first quarter, and trailed 6-3 at the break. In the second half, Citrus outscored Palomar 6-5, but it wasn't enough as they fell in a close one 11-9. Freshman Kris Williams led the way with five goals and a team high three ejections drawn. Adams scored once and handed out a pair of assists.

Citrus wrapped things up though on a high note downing Southwestern College 14-7. Citrus charged out to a 5-1 lead after the first quarter, but the Jaguars closed the gap in the second, with the Owls leading 8-6 at the half. In the second half, the Owls would put on a defensive clinic, shutting down Southwestern and holding them to a single goal over the final 16 minutes, all the while scoring six goals for themselves. Ortega paced Citrus with six scores, an assists, and a pair of ejections drawn. Phommachanh added a trio of goals in the victory.

With the two wins and two losses Citrus improves to 5-2 on the year. The Owls will be back out on the deck this weekend down in San Diego, when they participate in the San Diego Mesa College Tournament. Citrus opens up the weekend with a game against El Camino College which is set for a 12:30 PM start.
