Owls Fall in a Pair of Tight Contests

San Diego, CA -- The Citrus College Men's Water Polo team closed out the 2013 San Diego Mesa College Tournament on Saturday afternoon with a pair of losses. Both contests were tight, but ultimately the Owls fell to Cerritos College 13-8 and Santa Ana College 12-10.

The day started off with the game against the Falcons. Cerritos staked themselves to a 3-0 lead after the first quarter, but the Owls matched each of Cerritos' four goals in the second quarter to go into the break down three. In the second half, the Falcons pulled away, by scoring a more goal than Citrus in each of the third and fourth quarters.

Freshman Charles Ortega scored a team high three goals, adding an assist, and four steals. Fellow frosh Patrick Phommachanh added a pair of scores and a pair of steals in the loss.

Later on in the day, Citrus took on the Dons, for their second meeting of the year. In the first contest, Santa Ana pulled away late for a 14-9 win. This time, Citrus came out as the aggressor taking a 4-3 lead after the first quarter of play. In the second quarter each team scored three goals, giving the Owls a 7-6 advantage at halftime. In the third quarter, Santa Ana took back the lead going up 9-8. In the fourth, the Dons put it away for good outscoring Citrus 3-2.

In the loss, Citrus was led by Ortega who netted five goals and drew five ejections. Phommachanh and freshman Kris Williams each added two goals, while freshman Seth Adams recorded a team high five steals.

With the pair of losses, Citrus falls to 7-5 on the year. The Owls will try and rally from their first back to back losses of the year with a tough foe, when they open up Western State Conference play at home against Cuesta College on Wednesday. The game is set for a 5:30 PM start time.
