Huntington Beach, CA — It was a tale of two games for the Citrus College Men's Water Polo program when they opened up their 2014 season at the Golden West College Mini-Tournament. The Owls started the day off with a 23-8 takedown of Riverside City College, before falling to perennial contender Golden West 15-7.

In the opening contest, Citrus took control from the start, outscoring the Tigers 6-3 in the opening period. The Owls stretched their lead over Riverside in the second, shutting them out, while scoring four more times. In the third, Citrus more or less put things away, by outscoring Riverside 6-1, before finishing the game up in the fourth scoring seven more goals to RCC's four.

Sophomore Eugene Lee paced Citrus' effort in the game, scoring six times and drawing a pair of ejections. Sophomore Charles Ortega scored seven goals, and handed out a trio of assists, while freshman Jonathan lotero scored five goals for the Owls.

In the second game, Citrus kept pace through the first quarter, trailing 3-1 after one. The Rustlers though began to pull away in the second shutting the Owls out and scoring five more goals. The third played out like the first, and in the fourth Citrus showed some signs of life outscoring Golden West 6-4, but it was too little too late as Citrus fell by eight.

Lee scored twice more against GWC, while drawing four more ejections. Ortega, Lotero, freshman Robert Renteria and sophomore Seth Adams each had one goal in the loss.

With the split, Citrus moves to 1-1 on the year. The Owls will be back in the friendly confines of the Citrus College Aquatics Center this coming weekend when they host their annual Citrus College Tournament. Citrus will open up their 2014 home schedule this Wednesday when they host the University of La Verne at 6:00 PM.
