Owls Wrap Up Non-Conference Schedule With Big Wins

Fullerton, CA -- The Citrus College Men's Water Polo team wrapped up their 2015 non-conference schedule on Saturday morning when they headed down the 57 Freeway to participate in the Fullerton Mini-Tournament. The Owls won big in both games, defeating their host 26-10 and Grossmont College 18-8.

The Owls opened up strong against the Hornets, outscoring Fullerton 8-1 in the first eight minutes. The Hornets would give Citrus a run in the second quarter, but the Owls led by eight at the break. In the second half, Citrus outscored Fullerton 13-5 en route to the 16 point win.

In the win, sophomore Jonathan Lotero scored a team high five goals, while sophomore Mark Cordts added four. Sophomore Brandt Restad and Cordts each had a team best three assists, while sophomore Robert Renteria had four steals. Sophomore goalie Brad Thomson rounded out the numbers with six blocks.

Citrus kept it rolling into game two, outscoring the Griffins 5-2 in the first and 4-2 in the second. The Owls put some distance between themselves and Grossmont with a 5-1 third, before rounding the game out with four more scores in a 10 point win.

Freshman Daniel Velazquez would lead the way with four goals on the day, a number matched by Cordts. Velazquez and Restad each had three assists, while Velazquez also came away with five steals. Thomson had 11 blocks in the win, giving up just six goals in the process.

With the two wins, Citrus moves to 18-5 on the season. The Owls will be back in action this Wednesday when they head to Santa Monica College for one of their final two regular season contests at 3:30 PM.
