Owls Roll South of Border With Pair of Wins

San Diego, CA - The Citrus College Men's Water Polo team headed South on Friday afternoon for the first day of the South of the Border Invitational co-hosted by San Diego Mesa College and San Diego Miramar College. The Owls opened up the week by rolling to a pair of wins at San Diego Mesa College, the first a 15-9 victory over the host Olympians and the second a 19-8 victory over El Camino College. 

 The weekend started against a strong San Diego Mesa squad on Friday afternoon. Freshman Jonathan Wong scored three of Citrus' first four goals as they jumped out to a 9-5 lead at the break. The Olympians would match the Owls goal for goal in the third, but the Owls put Mesa away in the fourth with a 3-1 quarter for the six goal victory.

 Wong would finish with 8 goals on 11 attempts to pace the Owl effort. Sophomore Vincent Edwards added three goals and a pair of drawn exclusions. Sophomore goalie Drake Santos stopped 18 shots and stole six more in the win.

In the second game, Citrus picked up right where they left off, outscoring the Warriors of El Camino 8-2 in the first half en brought to doubling up El Camino 19-8. Wong added four more goals to go along with five assists. Edwards scored twice more, while sophomore Kristopher Williams scored three times and handed out three assists. Santos played just one quarter, recorded a shutout first quarter with three saves, while freshman Joshua Ocampo notched eight saves in relief.

With the two wins, Citrus improves 8-5 overall. The Owls will be back in action on Saturday when they wrap up the tournament at San Diego Miramar College. ​
