Citrus College battled Orange Coast College Wednesday night but ultimately conceded a 13-10 defeat.
The Owls drop to 7-1 with their first loss of the year while the Pirates improve to 3-2.
Breck Weiny led the Owls with four goals, while Ian Tauer, Julian Nichols and Matty Roebuck each scored twice.
Roebuck got Citrus on the board first, rattling in a goal less than two minutes into the game off a pass from Nichols. Weiny also scored in the first quarter, helping the Owls sit even with OCC 2-2 heading into the second.
Nichols capitalized again less than 30 seconds into the second to put the Owls in front 3-2, but the Pirates scored back-to-back goals to take the lead.
Another goal from Nichols evened the score, 4-4, with six minutes left before halftime. OCC turned things around, however, scoring two goals before the break to up its lead to 6-4.
The Pirates kept pressing and took a 7-4 lead in the third, but Roebuck found Tauer for a goal to try to keep the Owls close. Tauer struck again with two-and-a-half minutes left in the period, but OCC swam away with a 10-6 lead heading into the final quarter.
Citrus upped the ante in the fourth, out-scoring OCC 4-to-3, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Pirates. Roebuck had one goal and Weiny scored a hattrick in the period.
Jacob Perez came up big for the Owls in the cage, finishing the night with 10 saves and five steals.
The Owls get a week to recoup, hosting the Citrus "Under the Lights" Mini next Thursday, Sept.
