Santa Clarita, CA -- The Citrus College Softball team picked up a crucial early Western State Conference Blue Division contest on Thursday afternoon at College of the Canyons. The Owls won a wild one against the Cougars, 14-9 and moved into sole possession of 1st place.

Citrus got things going right away, scoring three in the top of the first, one on a RBI single by sophomore Megan Troutman and the other via a two RBI single to center field from freshman Autumn Bartholomy. Canyons would get a run in the bottom half of the inning, but the Owls scored five more in the second with sophomore Erinn Jaramillo, freshman Stephanie Noriega, sophomore Sandra "Gaby" Vera, Troutman, and Bartholomy all driving in runs.

Canyons would not go away. Canyons rallied in the bottom of the second, scoring six runs to make it 8-7. Jaramillo kept the fireworks going in the top of the third with a solo home run, but that would be all the scoring for Citrus until the sixth. Meanwhile, Canyons would tie the game up with their own home run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 9-9.

Needing to get back on track freshman Kaitlyn Garza put the Owls back in the scoring frame of mind with a bases clearing double to right-center field. A few pitches later a single by sophomore Valerie Velasquez singled in Garfza to make it 13-9. Sophomore Kiana "Kalei" Guillermo would drive in the Owls' final run of the game, giving them an insurance score in the top of the seventh when she tripled to center field.

Other than a couple of tough stretches early in the first inning and the bottom of the fourth, freshman Anissa Gallegos (8-2) was strong for the Owls in the circle. Gallegos walked two, gave up five total hits, and allowed five runs, only three of which we earned. She struck out two Cougars, but more importantly held Canyons scoreless over the final three innings of work, helping preserve the win.

With the win, Citrus improves to 13-4 overall and 4-0 in WSC Blue Division play. The Owls will be back out on the road this weekend as they take part in a triangular against Santiago Canyon College and College of the Desert this Saturday. The Owls will take on the Hawks at 11:00 AM and then the Roadrunners at approximately 1:00 PM, all at Santiago Canyon College.
