Glendora, CA - The Citrus College Softball team, ranked #10 in the State, returned to form on Friday evening in their double-header with visiting Chaffey College. The Owls' offense returned back to life as they swept the Panthers 9-4 and 11-1 in five innings.
In the opening contest, Citrus ran out to a 1-0 lead after one inning thanks to a run from freshman Mia Escobar on a wild pitch. Chaffey would match the run in the top of the second, but Citrus got a three-run home run from freshman Mia Escobar in the bottom half of the inning to stake the Owls to a 4-1 lead.
Chaffey would try to keep pace with a pair of runs in the top of the third, but a two run blast by freshman Molly Montell in the bottom of the third would make it 6-3. Chaffey would score once more in the top of the sixth, but the Owls put the nail in the coffin in the bottom of the sixth after an RBI single by freshman Karissa Martinez and two RBIs from freshman Valerie Ortiz to reach the nine runs.
In the win, Escobar would finish 3 for 3 with 3 runs and 3 RBIs. Freshman Jacquelyn Preciado was 2 for 3, and freshman pitcher Danielle Dominguez (9-3) got the win pitching seven innings giving up just eight hits, three earned runs, two walks, and recording a pair of strikeouts in the process.
In the second game, Citrus got off to a a great start with six runs. Freshman Seanna Jimenez would get the ball rolling with an RBI fielder's choice, followed by a RBI bases loaded walk by Montell. A few pitches later Preciado cleared the bases with a inside the park grand slam.
In the bottom of the second, Ortiz would score on a wild pitch, and then freshman Vanessa Garcia drove in a pair in the bottom of the third. Chaffey would score their lone run in the top of the fourth, but Citrus answered with an RBI single to right from Dominguez and a sacrifice fly via Martinez for the 11th run.
Ortiz would finish an impressive 2 for 3 with a pair of runs, while Garcia earned her first win of 2017 with five strong innings.
With the two wins Citrus improves to 10-7 overall. The Owls will be back in action next Thursday when they resume WSC South play against Victor Valley College. First pitch is set for 2:30 PM in Victorville.
