Citrus Softball hosted a triangular round robin on Friday between Rio Hondo College and Fullerton College, and a doubleheader with Santiago Canyon on Saturday. The Owls split games on Friday, beating Rio Hondo with a mercy rule win, 10-0 and dropping the 2nd game of the day to Fullerton, 2-6. Saturday, Citrus narrowly dropped both games of the doubleheader, despite solid play in both games by the Owls.
Friday vs Rio Hondo
Citrus came out of the gates swinging, and took control of the game immediately and throughout. The Owls handed Rio Hondo a mercy rule loss with a commanding 10-0 victory.
Becky Winder picked up the win from the circle, pitching a complete game shutout and allowing just 1 hit and only 3 runners reached bases. Winder improved to 1-1 on the season with the win.
Offensively, the Owls posted their best numbers of the young 2019 campaign. Seven players recorded hits in the game, and the Owls hit .500 as a team. Katie Kempton led the way for Citrus, smacking a homer and notching a double on 2 at bats, posting a 1.000 batting average. Kempton recorded 2 hits, 6 RBI's and 2 runs for the Owls. Alex Valenzuela came up with a double and 2 singles, driving in a run and scoring a run. Megan Jones hit a double and a single and scored a run.
Friday vs Fullerton
The Owls struggled to ignite as a team offensively, and Fullerton came out swinging. Citrus was able to put up a run in the 2nd inning on a solo home run by Brooke Fuss, and the 2nd run in the 7th on another solo shot by Kempton, who also recorded a double in the loss.
Saturday vs Santiago Canyon, Game 1
Citrus held the surging Santiago Canyon squad to two of their lowest scoring games of the season on Saturday. The first game was mostly a pitcher's duel that the Hawks were able to capitalize on, winning the game 2-0 and holding the Owls to just 2 base hits. Danielle Dominguez pitched a solid game for Citrus, striking out 2 and holding the Hawks to just 2 runs.
Saturday vs Santiago Canyon, Game 2
The 2nd game of the doubleheader yielded better results for the Owls, but Santiago Canyon was able to edge out the home team in extra innings, 3-2. The game went 9 full innings, and the Owls played some of their best softball of the year so far.
Becky Winder pitched all 9 innings, allowing just 3 runs on 37 batters faced. Offensively, Megan Jones went 2 for 4 with 2 base hits and an RBI; Becky Winder went 1 for 1 with an RBI and 2 walks, and stole 2 bases.
Santiago Canyon scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 9th on an RBI by Amanda Pacillas, and the Owls couldn't put together a rally to regain the lead.
Citrus moved to 3-8 overall in 2019, with lots of season left to play.
