Citrus College battled but came up short, 63-49, against Palomar College on the first day of the Lady Charger Classic, hosted by Cypress College.

The Owls slip to 7-2 on the year, while the Comets remain undefeated at 6-0.

Katherine Goostrey led the Owls with 14 points, while Felicity Mendoza chipped in 12 points on 6-of-11 shooting.

Citrus found itself in a big hole at halftime, down 33-18, but never gave up. The Owls opened the third on a 6-2 run to start to chip away at the deficit with Giselle Garcia-Nunez getting the spark going. Goostrey added four points in the spurt, but Palomar held onto its double-digit lead and wouldn't let Citrus can any closer than 12 points.

Goostrey knocked down a trey just before the final buzzer but the Comets walked away with the 63-49 victory.

The Owls look to bounce back on the second day of the tournament, taking on El Camino College on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
