What They Needed

Glendora, CA -- After suffering three straight losses for the first time in three years, the Citrus College Women's Soccer program got just what they needed on Friday afternoon when they defeated visiting San Diego Mesa College 3-0.

The Owls wasted little time in making their presence felt Friday. Sophomore Cindy Ramirez got the ball at midfield and made a number of Olympian defenders miss before handing the ball off to sophomore Alessandra Perez-Negron on the right side of the box. Perez-Negron took a couple of dribbles and then buried the ball in the back of the net, to give Citrus a 1-0 lead just three minutes into the game.

After the early score, Citrus got pushed back on their heels as San Diego Mesa took control of the first half tempo. The Olympians outshot the Owls 9-5 in that first frame, but sophomore keeper Amanda Garvin was game recording five of her six saves in that first 45 minutes. Mesa earned five total corners on the game, all in the first half, but Citrus rallied denying every advance.

In the second half, as the game wore on, the momentum switched into Citrus' favor. The Owls outhsot the Olympians 8-2 in the final 45 and held Mesa without a corner in the second half. Citrus' ball dominance paid off less than 15 minutes into the second period, when freshman Zariah Silva flipped the ball up to sophomore Rebekah Evans who only had the goalie to beat. Evans juked the goalie left and she bit, leaving a wide open goal for Evans to make it 2-0 in the 54th minute.

Evans wouldn't be done, as she helped put the game away for good late. With the game wearing on, sophomore Natalia Ponce sent a picture perfect pass up to Evans who again found herself with only the keeper to beat. This time Evans went left and beat the keeper again, to make it 3-0 for her fifth goal of the year.
