Not Enough

Glendora, CA - With three starters on the shelf due to injury and two more playing out of position the Citrus College Women's Soccer team simply didn't have enough when they hosted Santa Monica College on Tuesday night. The Owls gave up two first half goals, and couldn't come up with enough offense in the second half in a 2-1 loss to the Corsairs.

Citrus spent much of the game on their heals, especially in the first half when they were outshot 10-1. Santa Monica would come up with two goals in the first half, one in the 35th minute after Citrus and sophomore keeper Amber Henry had avoided three rapid fire attempts by Santa Monica, only to see the fourth find the back of the net.

The Corsairs would score again in the 39th minute when Santa Monica drew a borderline penalty kick. The attempt by Santa Monica's Simone Knudson would see Henry dive to the proper side and even initially block the shot, but the spin on the ball was such that it bounced off of Henry's hands, hit the ground and the bounced backwards over her out-stretched body.

In the second half, Citrus put together a reinvigorated offensive effort, getting numerous good looks, but never really getting a clean look at the goal. Citrus would take four total corner kicks in the final 45 minutes of play, but only one resulted in a goal when freshman Brittney Gonzalez scored of a ball sent into the box by freshman Devyn Bagwell.

Citrus would have a few more chances, including one sequence that saw the ball be stopped by the SMC keeper, only to be followed by a shot off the post and another clean look whiffed on. Eventually, the Owls wore down and Citrus fell by the single score.

With the loss, Citrus falls to 5-4 overall. The Owls will be back home one more time on Friday when they host Fullerton College at 3:00 PM.
