Owls Fall in Scorching Hot Season Home Opener

The Citrus College Women's Soccer team fell short in their first home match of the 2017 season on Tuesday. The Fighting Owls faced off against the San Bernardino Valley College Wolverines in a non-conference duel.

On one of the hottest days this summer, Citrus came out strong in the first half with a flurry of feisty defensive plays and maintained a strong presence throughout the first 45 minutes. Goalkeeper Olivia Handy put up big numbers in the net, recording 5 saves in the first half alone, and finished with 7 on the match.

But the relentless attack orchestrated by the Wolverines was too much to bear, and the visitors capitalized on key defensive errors by the Owls. At 47:27 into the match, San Bernardino's Valerie Ramos booted in the Wolverine's first goal on a hotly contested shot from 14 yards out. From there Citrus seemed to run out of gas and determination on defense, and the Wolverines forced their will on an overworked Handy, scoring two more goals to cap off a 3-0 victory for San Bernardino. The Owls fall to 1-1 on the season.

Citrus travels to Oxnard College this Friday and Sunday to compete in the Oxnard Sea Breeze Invitational. They will face off on Friday at 4:00 PM with College of the Sequoias, and Sunday at 10:00 AM versus Sacramento City College.
