The Citrus College Women's Soccer hosted College of the Canyons this afternoon in their first conference game of the season, winning 1-0 in a hard-fought game.
Citrus College remain undefeated on the season at 5-0-1, 1-0 in conference, while College of the Canyons move to 5-3 on the season and 1-1 in conference games.
After the Owls had two shots in the first half and Cougars had seven, the score remained tied 0-0 at halftime.
Citrus looked refreshed after halftime and quickly earned two corner kicks that resulted in two shots on goal that were saved by the Cougars goalie. The 52nd minute marked the Owls third corner kick of the half that resulted in Emily Cherry perfectly lobbing a cross in front of the Cougars goal where Aubrianna Mejia scored a header goal to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.
The remainder of the was a defensive battle, both sides put shots on goal, but the Owls were able to hold on by making it difficult for the Cougars to get meaningful scoring opportunities.
Citrus was led by Aubrianna Mejia who took four shots, three on goal, scoring a header goal that turned out to be the game winner, her fourth goal of the season. Emily Cherry had one shot on goal and assisted on the only goal of the game. Alexa Leon had two shots while Liliana Miramontes earned another shutout, saving all six shots on goal from the Cougars.
The Owls are home again next Tuesday, October 8th as they host Antelope Valley College at 6 p.m.
